They are based in Hillsburgh, Ontario. ︎︎︎︎︎︎︎︎︎ &nbsp;In the context of a virtual, long-distance residency at ID:I Galleri in Stockholm, JuJe will develop bodies of work that address our complex relationship with the lands on which we reside, as well as the surrounding locales. Thus far, our collaborative work has been concerned with the extractive agenda of our country, Canada, and the reality of climate change. Works like Terrestrial Nautica (2017-2019), and Rock Extraction (2019) illustrate the absurdly unsustainable extraction occurring on a large scale in the small community of Hillsburgh, Ontario, where we live, one hour outside of Toronto. Often sprayed with chemicals, these monocropping lands form the ad hoc stage for a frenzied, fast-paced, site specific intervention. Living and practicing on the parcel of land they inhabit, JuJe Collective often produces work that consists of absurd, disruptive gestures that challenge our idealized conception of bucolic living and agricultural landscapes. They highlight the environmental and sensorial turbulence that humans enact upon their natural surroundings in quick, highly theatrical performances.Laura Demers, 2021 In March 2020 as the pandemic became reality, our focus centred more attentively on the place that we inhabit. Every work we had produced in collaboration prior to the pandemic was inspired and completed here, on this one acre of land. These works were exhibited internationally, but there is more here than we had considered. In isolation, the trace of light in time became the true indicator of the moment, connecting us to reality. We are entering a new phase in our practice, one with a heightened consideration for this place. &nbsp;Between August 6th and 15th, 2021, we will produce and present new works in the form of video, photography and also drawing. New works and works in progress get uploaded on this page.&nbsp; Resource extraction is at the core of Canada’s history and current economy, JuJe has been focussed on resource extraction and its environmental impacts, from the very start of the collective. Our residency focusses on two areas of interest: The sensitive ecosystem and biodiversity of West Credit River, where the endangered population of Brook Trout is threatened by our municipality’s proposed sewage plant. &amp;To document and collect date on the transport truck mouvements in the hamlet of Hillsbugh Ontario.&nbsp; WEST CREDIT RIVER The river focus of the project is motivated by a sewage plant which will kill a native fish already under significant threat of extinction. An observation post was set up in the small space between the house and the road to document and collect data on the transport truck movements for a ten hour period, on Trafalgar Road, in the hamlet of Hillsburgh, Ontario. &nbsp; Data collected included: -type of truck -direction -identifiable markings -loaded or empty -tarped or not -nature of load 334 trucks were recorded in the 10 hour time frame. The collection of images was transposed into a stop motion video. The data continues to be analyzed, and upon initial review, the majority of truck traffic consisted of sand and gravel round trips, from local open pit mines to sites for the construction of roads and residential developments. Wood, steel, fiberglass, rubber. We live in a geographical region rich in mineral deposits from glacial times, in a town surrounded by gravel pits. Gravel trucks raddle the little house where we live, day and night. Fresh water springs are abundant in this area. The Credit River, among other bodies of water, is one of the last spawning grounds for the Brook Trout, a fresh water fish that is endangered. We live in a watershed; all the water runs through this gravel and gets purified. Instead, in recent years, the gravel is increasingly used for residential developments. A boulder-shaped trailer has served as a mobile installation and prop for JuJe for several years, during performances such as Rock Extraction (2019).
